As a member-driven national resource for artists and cultural organizers, ROOTS seeks to champion social and economic justice and the work of people in our field. Alternate ROOTS provides the connective tissue for a distinct segment of the arts and culture field – artists who have a commitment to making work in, with, by, for and about their communities, and those whose cultural work strives for social justice. The nature of this work spreads us far and wide from each other, so collaboration, peer sharing and combined impact can be a challenge. Founded in 1996, The National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) is dedicated to forging a grassroots progressive movement for social and economic justice and the political empowerment of Asian and Pacific American women and girls. NAPAWF unites our diverse communities through organizing, education, and advocacy, and works to connect state and local programs with a national vision of change. Through great perseverance, commitment and volunteerism, NAPAWF has sustained its energy and vitality. Its founding sisters, board, chapter leadership, members and staff are the many women and supporters who have given their time and energy (many without compensation) to build and sustain an organization that represents them, their ideals and the issues that touch them dearly. NAPAWF is now moving from an all-volunteer organization to a staffed organization, and is one of the few staffed national women of color organizations in this country.
