Queering Gender

One of the biggest obstacles to trans liberation is the erasure of trans women’s humanity and the irrational insistence that their experiences are not within the scope of society’s understanding of femininity. As part of our ongoing efforts to provide spaces for black women as well as queer and trans youth of color to share their perspectives on reproductive justice issues, SPARK took to the streets of Atlanta and asked community members what gender means to them.

Although responses from our field day offered many different ideas on what femininity means, there seemed to be a consensus that gender is a social construct and femininity is defined not by anatomy but by a myriad of personal factors that are as diverse as our lived experiences.
